We invite you to the grand, gabled, sandstone lady - Die Ou Pastorie. You will be overwhelmed by calm, wonderment and beauty because of her architecture, accommodation and landscape. This unique, historical and architectural gem of the Klein Karoo has passionately and respectfully been restored and refurbished, with a collection of antique furniture and South African Art - with the comfort and entertainment of our guests in mind. Some of the fantasy of the performing arts has flowed over into the ambiance of Die Ou Pastorie, as Johnny and Ilse van der Merwe have been award winning designers and manufacturers of Stage, Film and TV décor sets since the beginning of the South African television industry - including classics such as Pumpkin Patch to Idols and 7 De Laan. Ilse is an artist. She graduated at the Michaelis School of Fine Art (U.C.T) with distinction in painting and was the top Art Matric Scholar in the Cape Province. Her mother, Venus Gobregts, is also a widely acclaimed artist. Her exquisitely crafted paintings, filled with glorious colour, pomegranates, poppies, figs and other luscious symbols, are a delight and inspiration for all to behold. Enjoy Johnny's fine collection of European Antique and Yellow- and Stinkwood Africana Furniture, from the four poster beds to armoires. Our History History of Die Ou Pastorie The parsonage and Dutch Reformed church of De Hoop, Oudtshoorn, were completed in 1909 by imported Scottish stone masons. The Parsonage is a dignified building with 5m high ceilings and 500mm thick walls - cleverly protecting humans from the searing Karoo heat. Twelve Pastors served this rural Parish since 1909. The area of De Hoop gradually de-populated and the Parsonage and the Church became obsolete. The exquisite Church is in mint condition and worth a stroll up the hill for a visit. The Mansion has deservedly been restored as a historical and beloved gem of the Klein Karoo. The uninterrupted landscape surrounding the estate is flanked by the Swartberg - and the Outeniqua mountain ranges - on Route 62, 12km outside Oudtshoorn. It is centrally located for exploration of the Klein Karoo and the exquisite Garden Route nearby. CLIMATE Oudtshoorn has a dry climate with on average 320 sunshine days per year. Rainfall peaks in Autumn and Spring with possible thundershowers in Summer. Approximately 600mm of rain falls the whole year round. |
